A 12-year-old girl is being held on suspicion of shooting a fellow pupil in the head.
The incident happened at Salvador B Castro Middle School, sited in downtown LA.
The victim, believed to be a 15-year-old male, is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
