The 25 year old from Co Cork was remanded in custody in Co Cork this week.
The young man murdered his mother, Marian Horgan earlier in the week.
Mr Horgan murdered his mother at her home in Murmont Avenue on Monday.
A post mortem examination revealed the woman died of stab wounds.
Billy Horgan, Marian’s husband was injured and had been brought to hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Paul Horgan has made no reply to the charge, he did not state whether he was pleading guilty or not guilty.
He is due to appear in the district court next week.
