26-yr-old man remanded in custody after allegedly punching Galway Mayor in the jaw

As we reported yesterday, Galway’s mayor Niall McNelis allegedly received a punch to the jaw while he was trying to stop a man attacking a woman.

The alleged brutal punch was thrown at McNelis at Wolfe Tone Bridge last Friday around 8:30pm.

It’s understood that gardai have remanded a 26-yr-old man in custory in connected with the alleged punch.

Martin Ward, of no fixed abode, appeared before Galway District Court yesterday. He has been charged with assaulting Niall McNelis on 7 September last at Wolfe Tone Bridge, contrary to Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Act 1997.

He is further charged with being drunk in public and with breaching the peace by engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting words or behaviour on the same date at the same location.

It’s understood Martin Ward will appear next Monday in court again.
