52 people have been confirmed dead after a massive riot in the Mexican prison Monterrey.

The riot is one of the worst that a Mexican prison has seen in years.

The ongoing rivalry between drug cartels led to a huge dispute last night which resulted in a fire and tens of people being killed.

The brawl broke out after a dispute between two leaders of rival groups.

Prisoners used bats, blades, sticks and other weapons and also set fire to a room.

Ambulances were on the scene and family members flocked outside the prison gates urging for information about their loved ones.

The inmates bodies are yet to be identified. All the deaths were male.
