A number of reports claim that unregistered foreign nationals having received voting cards depite not being eligible to vote

There have been reports from a number unregistered people of foreign nationals around the country receiving voting cards despite not being eligible to vote in the upcoming referendum to remove constitution protection for unborn babies.

TD’s Mattie McGrath (Independent) and Peadar Tóibín of Sinn Fein have both been contacted by several people who had not been registered to vote in Friday’s referendum yet were mailed voting cards regardless.

Over 120,000 people have been added to electoral register in the last several months and this has raised concerns that increased pressure on the system could lead to polling cards being issued in error.

Deputy McGrath has raised these cases of wrongly issued polling cards in the Dáil but has had his concerns dismissed out of hand by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as conspiracy theories.
