Anna Kern, originally from the Ukraine recieved her outstanding results yesterday at Coláiste Nano Nagle on Sexton Street in Limerick.

The teenager wishes to study physiotherapy in the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin but does not have the means to afford third level education.

Ms Kern’s mother came to Ireland with Anna two years ago, and is currently prohibited from working in the country.

Anna said “I want to study here, I want to work here. I want to do everything I can in Ireland,”

The girl and her mother have been living in Knocknasheen in Direct Provision Accommodation for two years.

The Principal of Coláiste Nano Nagle Marion Cummins has  stated that she feels the Government is abandoning Anna and wishes that asylum seekers could be given the opportunity to continue their studies in the country, especially if they are willing to learn and have the ability.

Anna is due to meet with the Minister of Education Jan O’ Sullivan for the second time, tomorrow.

Ms O’ Sullivan stated that since the Government had accepted asylum seekers into second-level, that “there should be a commitment; there should be supports going forward for these people to go into third level, particularly the students who have the ability and particularly the students who want to learn”.
