Abortion on demand up to 12 weeks – Politicians react to 8th Amendment Committee recommendation

The Committee that so-called debated the legislation surrounding the 8th Amendment has recommended that abortion be permitted in Ireland up to 12 weeks which equates to abortion on demand.

It now appears that a referendum on the 8th Amendment may well be in the pipeline come 2018 but nothing is certain. What is certain is that it has been recommended to the Oireachtas to go to a vote.

It’ll be just a straightforward repeal of the 8th Amendment, a simple yes and no.

No campaigners, including Mattie McGrath and Ronan Mullen claim that the recommendation of abortion up to 12 weeks is directly abortion on demand, with no exceptions.

This overlooks all so-called “hard cases” – effectively leading to widespread abortion with no restrictions and that in essence is what the question will be coated as: Do you believe in abortion on demand or not.
