There is a disgracefully high number of patients on trolleys in Limerick’s University hospital this afternoon. A total of 66 patients on trolleys or on wards awaiting admission to a bed at University Hospital Limerick.

There’s 37 patients in the emergency department and another 29 on the wards. The figure makes a new record after Our Lady Of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda saw 58 patients on its trolleys this time five years ago.

In a statement, University Hospital Limerick said it has one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, seeing over 60,000 attendances a year.

The hospital said it regretted that any patient had to face long waits during busy periods.

It said extra medical and nursing staff have been recruited to deal with increased pressures.
