Almost two months on from the General Election, the toing and froing of forming a government is still ongoing, with no clear path yet in sight.

It has emerged in the last two days that what’s left of the Labour party may yet get into government again, thus making the results of the election largely irrelevant.

Today, acting Minister for Finance Michael Noonan: ‘It’s an open secret that Fine Gael would like to form coalition with Labour.’

In this scenario, Joan Burton would avoid a leadership contest within her party, and would remain in charge for as long as she wanted to or until she was ousted by a party motion.

More talks between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are ongoing today.
