According to various reports the country could soon be introducing a new tax levy after the Royal College of Physicians called on the government to consider placing a tax on drinks filled with excessive amounts of sugar.
The call comes after the British Government recently announced that they will be placing a €660m levy on on drinks with high sugar contents.
Members of the RCP say the government must seriously consider introducing the sugar tax as it is an hugely important step if they want to tackle obesity. Top physicians say they want to see a 20 cent increase in the price of 330ml cans of sugary drinks.
Meanwhile the new sugar levy in the UK has been welcomed by health experts across the water, who say it is “the first step” in tackling childhood obesity.
