Aircraft carrying 54 people crashes in remote mountain in Indonesia

papua

A Trigana Air aircraft that went missing earlier today has been confirmed as having crashed into a mountain in the remote Indonesian region of Papua.

The plane, a turbo-prop ATR 42-300 model carrying 54 people on board, lost contact with local air traffic control at around 3am this morning. Residents later confirmed the aircraft had crashed into Tangok mountain.

It isn’t immediately clear whether there are any survivors.

Trigana Air is on the list of airlines banned from operating in EU airspace, due to safety concerns about its ageing fleet.
