Parking space fury: Airport receives a backlash of criticism after they provide women only spaces in its car park

The age old joke of women and parking will continue to run throughout the ages which will surely cause great debate amongst the two sexes, but it seems that the notion that women need more space to park has already touched a nerve amongst feminist groups after one airport offered women only spaces in its long term car park.

The airport at the centre of the controversy Moscow Airport, who has since defended it’s rather unusual decision to offer extra large spaces in their car parks have already received a backlash of criticism from women far and wide who have labelled the move as sexist and outdated.

Although the airport claims the ‘women only’ spaces were put in place to assist women who have children who are known to need a lot more room to get in and out, many feel that the airports decision to label the spaces as women only was a blatant and unjust slur that referred to women’s parking abilities rather than the sorry excuse that women need more room to allow their children in and out of the car more easily.

The move which has become somewhat of a hot topic in the Russian capital has already drawn criticism from feminist groups both in the country and across the world who say the move is nothing more than insult to women who have been branded with an outdated stereotype.

Speaking about the move one activist said the airports decision was completely sexist in more ways than one as it did not only suggest that women are poor at parking but that the explanation given by management at the airport clearly suggested that looking after children was solely the woman’s responsibility.

They said: “If the goal was to provide more room for children why weren’t the spaces given a different name which would indicate that they were designated for families, but instead they were designated to women which makes me believe that the airport authorities believe that women need more room whilst parking.”

“This kind of thinking and branding is clearly sexist.”
