Dublin’s homeless people could very well be given a bed at Mountjoy Prison over the Christmas period it has been revealed today.
According to The Irish Daily Mail Dublin City Council are considering using a unused part of the facility to provide shelter for those sleeping rough this Christmas.
It is understood the option was discussed after the Department of Justice offered the now disused training unit to the City Council earlier this year.
The paper reports that Councillors have already held meetings to discuss whether or not to use unit which has 96 beds in total over the festive.
Although the unit is on the Mountjoy campus Dublin City Council have moved to reassure the public that the proposed unit is not directly connected to the main prison.
