An American Hero: A number of events are held to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King who was assassinated 50 years ago today

A number of commemoration ceremonies have taken place across the US to honour civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King.

King who is now hailed as an American hero was assassinated 50 years ago today.

Amongst the highlights to honour Dr King who fought relentlessly to improve conditions for African Americans all across the US, thousands of people marched took to the streets in Memphis whilst speeches and performances were held at the Memphis Hotel where Dr King was shot.

Hundreds of people convened in Washington, DC for a silent prayer walk on Wednesday from the MLK Memorial, which was erected in 2011, to the National Mall.

Meanwhile President Donald Trump tweeted a video clip of himself praising Dr King on his birthday in January.
