An exciting prospect – Taoiseach Leo Varadkar welcomes the idea of a joint UK – Ireland World Cup bid

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has welcomed the possibility of the UK and Ireland co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Mr Varadkar’s comments come after the British Prime Minister Theresa May said she and her government would fully support the UK and Ireland bid to host the tournament in 12 years time.

Speaking in Galway on Saturday, the Taoiseach said he welcomed the idea of a joint bid saying it is an exciting prospect.

The Taoiseach also said such a move would be welcomed as Ireland have proven in the past that it can host big events citing the Ryder Cup and Special Olympics as examples.

Although no official bid has submitted, the FAI have previously stated that they have held talks with the English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish football associations in regards to a joint bid.
