Appalling: Mother of five recovering from cancer facing three days in prison because she cannot afford to pay €220 TV licence fine

In a truly shocking story a terrified mother of five has made a heartfelt plea for help today as she revealed that she is facing three days in Mountjoy prison for not paying her TV licence.

The distraught woman Suzanne Kane, who is currently recovering from cancer, told her heartbreaking story on 4fm’s Niall Boylan show earlier today. Will serve a 3 day prison sentence after she couldn’t afford to pay €220 fine. An emotional Suzanne told host Boylan: “I’m going to be brought to Mountjoy prison for three days for not paying my TV license. “They (inspectors) came and I hadn’t got a TV license. “I went to court and the judge said I had to pay my license and I had to pay a fine. ”

The distraught mother further explained: “I don’t have it. We’ve one wage coming in, I don’t have any social welfare or anything like that.” The family were hit hard when Suzanne’s cancer left her out of work, and she noted to Niall that they are only now “getting back on our feet”. Suzanne explained that she tried to reason with inspectors and explain to them that amid all of their money worries, the TV license was “on the backburner.” “We don’t even have channels. The kids link up the laptop to it (the TV).

However when she tried to explain, her situation, “no-one would listen.” Subsequently a warrant was issued for her arrest, and Suzanne was given two options either pay the money or serve three days in Mountjoy prison. Meanwhile generous listeners who heard the emotional mum’s plea, quickly called the show and offered to pay the fine for Suzanne. There since has been no update whether or not Suzanne will face a Jail term after her plea.
