As support for Repeal campaign collapses, Regina Doherty concedes defeat is imminent

The Minister for Employment and Social Protection Regina Doherty has claimed that the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment will be lost.

Doherty said that the proposed abortion on demand up to 12 weeks is not going to be passed by the people.

She timidly made her comments after various new polls released today show a major falloff in support for the proposed abortion on demand up to 12 weeks.

Just some 40% of the Irish public agree with abortion on demand up to 12 weeks – a dramatic fall in just a number of weeks.

Deputy chairperson of the Pro Life Campaign, Cora Sherlock, has said she does not believe the current proposals on the referendum are something the public will accept.

Ms Sherlock said it does not matter whether the Government puts forward a proposal for ten weeks, 12 weeks or 18 weeks, the reality is that when you suggest a repeal of the Eighth Amendment “what you are really talking about is abortion on demand”, and it appears more and more of the public are agreeing with Ms Sherlock.
