At least 145 people die after crashed oil tanker explodes in Pakistan

Local rescue teams say that at least 145 people have been killed, after crowds gathered to collect fuel leaking from a crashed oil tanker in Pakistan.

It is understood that the driver lost control after a tyre burst near the city of Bahawalpur at around 6.30am, local time. The truck flipped over and the tank ruptured.

Crowds from surrounding villages began flocking to the crash site, carrying buckets and other containers to gather fuel leaking from the tank.

Soon after, and for reasons yet unknown, the fuel ignited, leading to a massive explosion and fireball that engulfed hundreds of people.

At least 145 locals died in the immediate aftermath, with over 140 more injured, many of them critically. Dozens of vehicles were also destroyed.

The truck driver survived, and was taken into custody.
