It one of the coldest starts to March in recent years, many areas in Leinster, Munster and North East Ulster received their fair share of snow overnight.

Many areas are still covered in snow this morning and roads are said to be “treacherous” in many areas according to the AA.

Spokesperson Dermot Branigan says:
“The gritter trucks were out until 2am this morning and out again this morning from 6am. We are urging people to drive slowly in the conditions”.

Gardai are also warning motorists to be extra vigilant this morning:
“We’d like to remind gardai to allow for extra time for their journeys this morning considering the conditions are extremely bad this morning and will be until at least 10am. The message is simple, slow down and give yourself enough time with the expected delays”.

According to Met Eireann, temperatures are set to rise later today:
“Further outbreaks of sleet or snow in eastern parts of Leinster up to Friday afternoon, giving accumulations in mountainous areas and possibly some short lived accumulations at lower levels during the early part of the morning. Otherwise, sunny intervals and scattered showers, most of the showers occurring in the north and west, mainly falling as rain. Fresh and gusty, northerly winds setting in will make it feel rather cold for the time of year. Highest temperatures 5 to 8 degrees.”
