Boots Ireland have confirmed that from today onwards they will prohibit the sale of high caffeine energy drinks to children under the age of 16.
The pharmacy chain who have implemented the ban on drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre, said they have decided to introduce the ban in the interest of children’s health and safety.
It is thought that the chain implemented the ban after recent studies found that high caffeine energy drinks can be harmful to children.
In a move that will be welcomed by the government who are actively trying cut childhood obesity, Boots now say that those aged 16 and over will have to provide ID when purchasing high caffeine energy drinks.
The latest move now makes the pharmacy chain the second retailer to introduce such a ban, after Aldi introduced a similar ban earlier this year.
