Brave Dundalk beaten 2-1 in Russia tonight

A brave Dundalk FC were yet again unlucky as they were beaten 2-1 by Zenit St Petersburg in Russia tonight.

In a game that saw the Russian side dominate possession, the lilywhites’ were very unlucky not to take home at least a point after a hard fought match with the Russian giant’s.

Stephen Kenny’s men who were underdogs going into the game can go home with their heads held high tonight after they were narrowly beaten once again. In a first half that saw the Russians dominate proceedings they only managed to break the deadlock after a defensive mistake by Graham Gartland in the 41st minute.

However if the Russian side thought they were going to have it all their own way they wee in for a rude awakening when Daryl Horgan capitalised on a sloppy defensive mistake to put Dundalk level.

Although the Russian side pressed for an equaliser it didn’t come until the 77th minute when Guilloano managed to tap in after scrappy defending in the box, but the game was far from over and Dundalk could have drawn level once again after McEleney hit the post after a superb chip over the oncoming Zenit keeper.

Even though Dundalk did push for a late equaliser the Russian side hung on to take the 3 points. However Dundalk still have a great chance to make the last 16 as they are still second in the group after Maccabi Tel Aviv drew 0-0 with AZ Alkmaar.
