Authorities in Mexico have now confirmed that at least 230 people have now been killed following an earthquake on Tuesday afternoon.

The confirmation of the death toll which could yet still rise, comes after brave rescue teams spent the last 48 hours trying to rescue civilians from the ruins of fallen buildings.

According to state media reports rescue workers are still trying to locate survivors who have become trapped under the rubble of buildings following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the centre of the country at lunchtime on Tuesday.

It is believed Mexico City has been severely affected by the quake as it is known to have caused at least 44 large buildings to collapse with many people inside, amongst those was the Enrique Rebsamen school which still has at least 30 children trapped inside alive.

Rescue teams have been working frantically to rescue the students over the past 24 hours after they were alerted to their whereabouts when a little girl was discovered alive beneath the ruined building.

Amongst the dead are at least 21 primary school children who tragically lost their lives after their school which is located in the south of the city collapsed as a result of the powerful shockwave which spread across the city.

Although many rescue missions are being carried out across the city and in other affected regions, authorities say the death toll could still sadly rise as many people are still reported missing.

They also have moved to reassure the public by saying their teams will continue to search for missing loved ones who may have been caught up in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.
