The death has just been announced of Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness.

He was 66 years old.

He died early this morning at Derry’s Altnagelvin Hospital with his family by his bedside after being diagnosed with a rare heart disease last December.

Formerly a member of the IRA’s Army Council, McGuinness became Sinn Féin’s chief negotiator in the peace process and was the deputy leader of Northern Ireland since 2007 along side initially Ian Paisley and subsequently Peter Robinson and Arlene Foster.
