The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment Richard Bruton has said that the proposed carbon tax is not about raising revenue.
Mr Bruton who is in favour of introducing the tax, said the Government are considering introducing the new tax in an effort to reduce Ireland’s overall carbon footprint.
Speaking at a Fine Gael conference in Dublin, Mr Bruton said the tax is being considered in order to encourage people to reduce their carbon footprint.
Although Mr Bruton admitted that nothing is set in stone, he said those concerned about the tax shouldn’t be as they will gain money back once they reduce their carbon footprint.
He added that he hopes the government will be able to provide further information on the proposed taxes within the first quarter of this year.
