Budget 2018: Donohoe pleased with his plan despite minimal new housing initiatives and the homeless crisis to continue for years

Speaking in a live radio chat, on Today with Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio 1, Paschal Donohoe defended his budget that was rolled out on Tuesday.

In relation to the homeless crisis, Donohoe said that he knows “the damage that it is causing” but that there has been increased funding available to homeless services.

The Finance Minister said: “We will be building more social houses….we can not build them all in a single year.

“The total homes to be built will be 50,000 homes.

“If I was to say to you in October we’re going to have thousands of new homes built next year, you’d ask me how they’d get planning permission.”

Meanwhile, taxes for private landlords have not increased in spite of the soaring costs of renting.
