According to various news reports it is understood that authorities in Canada have placed two poultry farms in British Columbia region under quarantine after they tested positive for bird flu.

Authorities say the closure comes after tests were carried out at the two infected sites which are believed to be a turkey farm and a chicken breeding facility.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency released a statement in relation to the outbreak in which they say: “Preliminary testing by the province of British Columbia has confirmed the presence of H5 avian influenza on two farms in the Fraser Valley region”.

Meanwhile authorities have said that they expect to receive the results of testing in the few days. A spokesperson said: “the tests will confirm pathogenicity and to determine the precise subtype and strain of the virus”.

It is thought the testing was undertaken after both sites apparently experienced an unexpectedly high number of sudden bird deaths last weekend.
