The former Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Cardinal Desmond Connell has passed away aged 90.
He was Archbishop of Dublin from 1988 until 2004 and Cardinal since 2001.
Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin confirmed that Cardinal Connell passed away last night in his sleep after he had been sick for some time.
Cardinal Connell resigned in April 2004 and handed over the care of the Dublin archdiocese to Archbishop Martin who has been presiding ever since.
Cardinal Connell was one month short of his 91st birthday.
