Case of tuberculosis confirmed at University Hospital Galway

Hospital sources at University Hospital Galway have confirmed a case of tuberculosis at the facility.

Patients and staff who have been in close proximity with the infected individual will now be screened for the condition.

Tuberculosis is an infectious, airborne disease characterized by chronic cough, fever, and night chills. The condition used to be quite widespread in Ireland back in the 1950s, where it was commonly known as the ‘consumption’ due to the weight loss associated with it.

In present times, a combination of antibiotics is used to fight tuberculosis, though vaccination campaigns over the last decades have greatly reduced the disease’s morbidity.
