John McCormack, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, has confirmed that his salary will be reduced to €135,000 a year.

The move comes after a strong backlash against the society, over its decision to cut the support funding for cancer patients and their families.

Such decision caused a firestorm of controversy, and the organization later partially reversed this move, though the fund will only be kept open for children.

In response to the controversy, Mr. McCormack said: “It wasn’t the only scheme that we had targeted, we had looked throughout the organisation for savings.”

“We made savings in our staff cuts for example, we are not replacing people who are on maternity leave, we are not replacing people who have left the organisation,

“So we have €750,000 of savings in staff costs.”
