An American man who was mugged over the weekend in Dublin, said he felt “overwhelmed” by the kindness from the people of Ireland.

Chicago native, Donnie, spoke out on RTÉ’s Liveline and shared his account of the traumatic event.

The incident took place on Sunday night, after coming from Burger King, Donnie was walking along the North Quays, near Bachelors Walk at around 11:30 pm.

He had stopped to ask a woman for directions to the hostel in which he was staying, explaining on Liveline that he has “a terrible sense of direction”.

He said the woman, who looked “well-dressed”, walked with him alongside with two other men to show him the way, when they turned a corner one of the men had a knife.

They asked for all his money and when they saw that there was only €20 in his wallet they choked him and punched him in the face.

Donnie had his passport, iPhone and wallet stolen and suffered a concussion, broken tooth and a cut lip.

After announcing on Liveline that he was upset he would have to cut his journey short after losing all his cards, listeners from all around the country showed generosity by offering the American tourist a place to stay free of charge so that he did not have to fly home early.

He said: “I want to say to everybody that’s been so kind with these offers, if you ever come to Chicago, mi casa es su casa”.
