According to latest figures published by the Gardaí over 500 people have been arrested since the start of this year’s anti-drink driving campaign on December 1st.
Gardaí say the alarming figure marks an increase of over 34% on the number for this time last year. They also say they have arrested 40 people on suspicion of drink-driving in the past 48 hours.
Assistant Garda Commissioner Michael Finn said the vast majority of arrests took place at checkpoints.
