Climate blues: New study finds that those living in colder and darker climates drink more

A new study has found that those living in colder and darker climates with less sunlight are more likely to drink alcohol than those living in warmer climates.

According to the latest study published by researchers in the US, those living in regions with colder climates and less sunshine are more likely to consume more alcohol over the course of their lives.

The study which examined data from 193 countries found that liver disease and binge drinking is more prevalent in certain areas than others.

It is understood that the resarch which was published on Hepatology, found that depression was the leading factor when it comes to more alcohol consumption and that less sunlight was linked to higher depression rates.

Speaking about the recent link, Senior author Ramon Bataller, associate director of the Pittsburgh Liver Research Centre, said: “This is the first study that systematically demonstrates that worldwide and in America, in colder areas and areas with less sun, you have more drinking and more alcoholic cirrhosis.”

The data which was collected by the World Health Organization and the World Meteorological Organization, also led to scientists to uncover that weather patterns were linked when it came to liver chrosis amongst people in poorer climates, with more people presenting with the illness than those living in more tropical regions.

It is expected that the findings will be presented before a WHO summit in Edinburgh.
