Cold weather set to return for a time this week

Hopes to banish the winter weather are all but dashed today, as forecasters say wintery conditions are set to return, for a few days at least.

After a period of glorious sunshine and spring-like weather, freezing conditions and heavy and thundery showers will make an unwelcome appearance in some areas, and even snow is likely in higher ground.

Some widespread showers blighted parts of the country already this morning, and temperatures are set to vary between 6C and 10C throughout the day, at best.

Tuesday night is expected to be a very cold one, with temperatures set to go as low as -4C, with dense fog overnight possible.

It will be mostly sunny on Wednesday then, with daytime temperatures ranging between 8C and 11C. Tomorrow evening though, the thermometer will sink back to near freezing, and heavy, wintry showers will last through the night, with snow possible on high ground.

Thursday morning will bring back clear skies everywhere, with temperatures reaching 10C, with frost and fog returning later in the evening.

Unsettled weather is expected to continue into the weekend.
