A fruit grower in the UK has reportedly struck a deal with supermarket chain Tesco to trial a newly-developed yellow and orange-skinned apple with pink flesh.

The unusual new colour for the fruit has been named as Surprize and has been described by bosses at Tesco as a “real head-turner”, the apple was grown by award winning fruit expert William Barnett at a farm in Tillington, near Hereford in England.

The colourful new apple will go on sale at 120 Tesco stores around the UK starting tomorrow, with a cost of £1.75 for a pack of four.

Ciaria Grace fruit product developer at Tesco has said: “This apple literally stops people in their tracks on account of its unusual pale orange and yellow skin. “This is the first time that it’s ever gone on sale and there are only limited supplies but if it’s a success we will stock it again next year.” It is not yet known whether the colourful apple will go on sale in Tesco’s Irish stores.
