Concerns at maternity unit in Cavan Hospital were raised by senior consultants months ago

Back in 2014, shortcomings at the facility were highlighted, particularly in relation to lack of staff on stand by for emergency situations.

These comments come as the tragic deaths of four babies at the unit are being investigated. The latest death occurred only last week, when a baby died during a Caesarean section delivery.

And it has also emerged that there have been other “near death” events, which did not require further inquiries.

Despite all this, Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has insisted that there is no need for the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) to investigate the maternity unit.
