Costly remarks: French Government could introduce new laws that will see men being fined for making sexist remarks

The French government are reportedly looking at proposals that would see new laws being introduced that would see men being fined if they make sexist remarks towards women in a public place.

It is understood the new proposals are strongly being considered after a report was submitted to the Equality Minister Marlene Schiappa and the Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet for review.

If the proposed new legislation is passed in Parliament, men who are found guilty of harassing women in public could face a fine of up to €90.

The fine which would be issued to men found guilty of stalking, verbally abusing women or making inappropriate remarks about a woman’s appearance, could potentially rise to €175 if they fail to pay it on time.

It is thought the new proposals are being considered after recent figures showed that women have repeatedly claimed they have been harassed by men on daily basis.
