A couple have been jailed for trying to smuggle cocaine into the country by hiding it in the soles of their shoes after they met online.

They were caught in April this year after stepping off a flight at Dublin Airport. One of the offenders Gerly Juarez has claimed that her lover Kingsley Edward bought her the shoes and told her to wear them as they set off for a holiday in Ireland.
Edward, of Nigerian descent but a UK citizen, wore an identical pair himself.

The couple were arrested at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 after touching down on the 15th of April and were searched on arrival as they were believed to be trying to smuggle drugs into the country.

Customs found half a kilo of cocaine, worth just under €40k, was found in Edward’s shoes. They also found €30k of the drug on Juarez. A another unnamed person wearing similar cocaine-packed shoes was also arrested at the scene but is yet to be dealt with by the courts.

Mr Kingsley Edward has already served a jail sentence for a similar offence in the UK. He has been jailed for three years for his part in this operation. Ms Juarez, a Costa Rican native and a mother of three was sentenced to five years with the final four were suspended.
