Australian batsman Phillip Hughes has sadly passed away due to injuries sustained when he was struck in the head by a ball in a domestic game earlier this week.

He was batting for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground, when the accident happened.

Hughes, who was wearing a protective helmet, collapsed on the pitch and was given first-aid. He was then rushed to the city’s St Vincent’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was being monitored in the intensive care unit, but he unfortunately lost his fight for life. The Australian team doctor Peter Brukner confirmed that Hughes never regained consciousness.

He would have turned 26 this Sunday.
