The iconic 5-metre steel cross which stood atop Carrauntoohil mountain in Co. Kerry has been cut down by vandals.

Two members of the public made the discovery earlier today. It appears that an angle grinder was used to slice the cross near its base.

Erected in 1976 at Ireland’s highest peak, it took 100 people to raise the cross.

The incident has been reported to local Gardai.
