Security in and around the island nation of Cyprus has been noticeably stepped up after RAF warplanes began flying combat missions from RAF Akrotiri.

The island of Cyprus is located less than 100 miles from the Syrian coast. The British air force considers RAF Akrotiri as a key strategic airbase to launch combat operations in the Middle East. The base itself houses about 2,500 military and civilian staff.

Cyprus’s income relies largely on tourism, and there are now growing concerns that the British contribution in the offensive against IS may trigger retaliations, thus jeopardizing such valuable asset.

Cypriot Minister of justice and public order Ionas Nicolaou has confirmed that security levels have been raised over the weekend, as a precautionary measure. He added: “The police are taking all necessary security measures, based on the information they receive on a daily basis.”
