It has been announced this afternoon that the Dáil has voted  unambiguously in favor to pass new laws to ban smoking in cars where children are present.

The new bill received little oposition in the chamber this afternoon and was passed ahead of the Christmas break. Although  the law will not come into force until the Gardaí develope new procedures to figure out how it can be applied.

Meanwhile the news was welcomed by the Children’s minister James Reilly who said: “This legislation is a reminder to people not to light up in a car with children present. “Where people disregard this reminder, it will serve as a punitive measure.
He went onto say: “I reiterate that this legislation is about protecting children, not penalising smokers.”
