Day Of Reckoning: Joan Burton expected to resign as Labour party leader tomorrow

According to various reports this evening Labour Party leader Joan Burton will vacate her position as party leader sometime tomorrow.

Sources say Ms Burton will meet with her fellow Labour party colleagues tomorrow where she will willingly tender her resignation. The former Tánaiste’s resignation comes after the party’s poor showing during the General Election after they party only win seven seats in the Dail. It is now believed that former Environment minster Alan Kelly and former minister of state Sean Sherlock will contest the party leadership.

There were reports that Former minister for public expenditure Brendan Howlin was considering entering the race for the party leadership, but has since withdrawn.

Reports say if Ms Burton resigns tomorrow, deputy leader Alan Kelly will replace her as a caretaker leader until an election for a new leader takes place.
