Dead babies buried with deceased adults in some Irish hospitals

According to a report from RTE, some  hospitals across the country allegedly placed the bodies of dead babies into coffins with deceased adults. A letter obtained by RTE states that they are unsure as to whether the families of both parties were aware of the “tandem burials”.

Dr Ambrose McLoughlin, secretary general of the Department of Health, was briefed about the issue in the letter from Tony O’Brien, Director General of the HSE which RTE obtained. It apparently happened in “exceptional circumstances” when there were no other options for burial.

The letter reads: “Our understanding is that the remains would have been placed with adult remains and that ideally the awareness and understanding of both families involved would have been sought, though this is not guaranteed.”

RTE reports the document states that hospitals have confirmed the practice, particularly mortuary staff.

A liaison has been appointed by the HSE to deal with any inquiries.
