Decision Time – Some 21,000 Fine Gael members to cast their votes today and elect a new party leader

It is decision time today as 21,000 Fine Gael members will cast their vote decide the next party leader.

After weeks of talk and debating both Mr Varadkar and Mr Coveney will know their fate by next Friday as party colleagues from all across the country will elect their next leader.

The long awaited vote will ultimately come down to the numbers as TDs and Senators will have the biggest say, with 65% of the total vote.

With the rest being compiled by Councillors (10%) and members (25%).

Although Mr Varadkar is the clear favourite amongst senior party leaders it is understood Mr Coveney has the majority of the support from the minority members of the party, which could ultimately leave the race a lot closer than many expected.

Both men who have been busy campaigning since the Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced his decision to vacate his role, say they are more than able to lead the party in the right direction and do what is best for the people of Ireland.
