Decreasing the flow: HSE to save millions by not allowing highly expensive erectile dysfunction drugs being prescribed to medical card holders

The HSE have confirmed that they will be introducing a new cost cutting measure that will stop GP’s from prescribing highly expensive anti-impotency drugs through the medical card system.

The move comes after the health service issued a memo to all doctors across the country informing them that only the generic version viagra will be accepted through scheme.

It is thought the HSE have called on doctors to stop prescribing erectile dysfunction drugs such as Cialis in order to save millions of euro in funding.

Speaking about the decision HSE official Ann Marie Hoey said that the measures are justified given that many other European countries don’t dispense erectile dysfunction drugs on their public system.

Ms Hoey also claimed that if the HSE were to continue to fund the expensive drug, “it would reduce the capacity of the HSE to fund other services and technologies”.

It is expected that the cost cuts would save the HSE over €3m in funding given that it spent over €4.5m on Cialis last year alone.
