Department of Foreign Affairs confirm a search operation is underway for an Irishman who has gone missing whilst hiking in the US

The Department of Foreign Affairs have confirmed that police in the United States have launched a search operation for an Irish man who has gone missing whilst on a hiking trip along the Pacific Coast Trail.

It is understood the search for the man David O’Sullivan, aged 25, was launched after his family officially reported him missing on the 30th of June.

According to the Department David travelled to the west coast of the US in March of this year to hike from the Mexican border to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail.

However his family became deeply concerned after they received no contact from him since his last email which was sent from the town of Idyllwild in California.

It is also believed that David was hiking alone and he was due to meet a friend in Santa Barbara in early May but he never arrived.

A spokesperson for the Department have said they are currently liaising with US authorities as well as David’s family.
