A British MP has caused outrage after she suggested that the threat of food shortages Ireland following a no Brexit deal should be used to leverage the EU and the Irish Government over the highly debated backstop agreement.
The Conservative MP behind the comments Priti Patel, has been blasted by government ministers in Ireland, the UK and across the EU who have called her comments outrageous and despicable.
It is believed that the British MP made her thoughtless comments whilst speaking to The Times UK newspaper, after a report highlighted the problems of possible food shortages in Ireland in the event of a no Brexit deal.
Ms Patel’s comments have been branded distasteful given the history of the Great Famine in Ireland.
