A Garda investigation is underway at Trinity College after the college was subjected to scam that seen over €1m taken from a fund for special needs students.
According to reports the sophisticated scam was carried out by ruthless thieves who sent emails asking request college officials to change their bank account details for payees.
Although a spokesperson for the college has said some the much needed funds have been recovered after they noticed the scam immediately, they have said it is too early to say whether everything can be recovered.
The spokesperson however did say any shortfall will be provided from the university’s future commercial revenues.
Gardaí say they are currently reviewing the college’s bank records whilst Trinity College have also said they have enlisted the services of an external computer forensic team in order to help in establish the technical details of what exactly happened.
