Drink Up: Seanad officially passes new legislation that will see Good Friday alcohol ban lifted in 2018

There was good news for this working in the drinks industry as the Seanad officially passed a new legislation today that will put an end to Good Friday alcohol sales ban.

Although publicans and those working in the drinks sector have long lobbied for the law to be overturned the new law which will come into effect in 2018 was only passed today with the assistance of Senator Billy Lawless who personally submitted the Bill before the Dail earlier this year.

Speaking about the new legislation Senator Lawless said the Intoxicating Liquor (Amendment) Bill sends a clear message that “Ireland is a pluralist, globalist, forward-thinking country.”

He added: “In my mind the passage of today’s bill is another progressive step in Ireland’s long journey in the separation of church and State.”
