The town of Drogheda, Co. Louth is now officially the biggest town in Ireland after the 2016 census shows a total of 41,000 people live in the wee county town.

The residents have pushed for many years to get the town a new City status, but a dispute of whether it was really the biggest town in Ireland slowed the deliberation.

Drogheda was followed in second place by Swords in Co Dublin and Dundalk also in Co Louth coming in third place.

Dublin now has 44% of the urban Irish residents while 37% live in rural Ireland.
